Somewhat similar conditions obtain at Tientsin

and Hankow, the principal difference being that at

these two Ports the German Government have Con-

cessions of their own and have less occasion to make

use of our Concession for the trade and residence of

their subjects. At Tientsin the German Consulate

was formerly in the British Concession and on its

removal to the German Concession the lease was I

understand, made over for the original term of 99

years to the German Bank which still functions in

the British Concession. On the other hand, a con-

siderable number of British subjects reside in the

German
